Speaks To Me Sunday #80

9 Jul

Totally guilty of trying to solve my life. I constant find myself wanting to cross EVERYTHING off of my To-Do List in one day.

But if I cross it all off… what’s left to do? What life is there left to live? I don’t have to solve every problem and conquer every obstacle right this very minute. I don’t have to have everything planned out and perfectly pieced together.

What if I could stop looking at my life as something to solve and instead view it as a pile (an organized one ūüėČ) of wonderful and good things. What if I cared for and nurtured those good things? What if my life grew into something beautiful?

I love a good To-Do list as much as the next Type-A girl. But even I have to admit that a Christmas-Morning-like pile of all the wonderful things in my life is so much more fulfilling than a crumpled up list of crossed off (or ya know… rewritten again and again) problems and worries.

So, one at a time. I want to build my pile of good things. Now I just have to decide what will I add to the pile first.

Friday! The week is coming to an end and so is summer. That definitely brings a mix of emotions for me. That nostalgia for back to school days and the relief that a busy peak season is winding down at work. We are certainly trying to enjoy the last weeks of summer…

1. Dan and I have become such homebodies over the last year. I blame our cats. They are just so cuddle-able. ūüôā But we’ve decided we need to get out more. So, we have been running around LA and exploring the city. In the last couple weeks we’ve gone to Echo Park for picnicking and pedal boating, we adventured downtown for some delicious coffee at Philz and to check out Skyspace LA (a great exhibit in LA’s tallest building including an outdoor glass sided slide!), and we’ve eaten at many delicious restaurants – my favorite was The Griddle Cafe and their delicious pancakes! It’s safe to say we are having a great time, and we’ve got plenty more stops on our list.

2. ¬†Because of all our outings, we have been going on so many more dates, and it’s been awesome. I think that sometimes when you are married you do things together for habit, convenience, etc. It’s been great to set specific time aside to go on real dates, to intentionally spend time together. It really makes a difference. So happy he’s my forever date.

3. ¬†The Giving Keys is a fantastic company with an inspiring story. I’ve long been a fan of the gorgeous jewelry they make and the reasons behind it. I’ve been wearing their “Brave” necklace for more than a year, but I just added another to my collection. I’ve been experiencing some worries and anxiety about the future lately. Something my mom well knows! She had The Giving Keys make a special necklace for me – “Peace.” It’s exactly what I needed. Aren’t moms the best?

4. ¬†It’s almost vacation time! (And not a moment too soon. We have been seeing pictures of our Europe trip last year pop up, and it’s making us anxious for adventure.) This year we are headed to Orlando for Universal and Disney! Because as you know, we not only work at a theme park, we also love visiting them. We might be crazy. Haha. But we are so excited to go explore, ride all the rides, eat delicious food, and enjoy some much needed time away and time with each other. The countdown is on!

5. Lemon and Jack are still here. And still the cutest. It’s absurd how much I love them.

Happy Friday, y’all!

Welcome back! It’s that time again…

1.  Dan is the best gift giver. He often surprises me with sweet little presents for no reason at all. Lately he’s brought home a few new editions to our growing “nerd collection.” Super appropriate as we get closer and closer to our trip to London and visiting Warner Brothers for their Harry Potter tour!

 2.  I’ve never spent a lot of time exploring downtown Los Angeles, but I have friends who are very familiar. This week I got to explore DTLA with the best guide around, Trevor! We tried a delicious new coffee spot straight from SanFran called Philz. That alone was worth the trip downtown. I highly recommend the ginger snap iced coffee. I want to go back and bring all my friends. We explored a bit of the flower market and I loved getting to recreate my wedding bouquet in my mind. Then we hit the Grand Central Market, and I don’t know when I’ve smelled anything so yummy. It took some time to decide which place would get our business for lunch, but we ended up with some awesome pizza from Olio. And finally we hit The Spheres at MacArthur Park. They are these lovely orbs being painted by people in the neighborhood. It was quite the adventure! Trevor, thank you for the fabulous date and for being one of my favorite friends.

3.  Audition turned Call Back is always a good thing! That was a highlight of my week. Here I was with my mind already in Europe and then I had to bring the focus back to my career. Not a bad reminder to live in the moment. I never want to wish time away – even if I’m excited about what’s to come!

4.  Girl’s Day is the best. My beautiful besties and I treated ourselves to lunch and a mani/pedi together. It was the most relaxing and refreshing afternoon. We got to enjoy each other’s company and make some great memories. I’m so lucky to have them in my life.

5.  Europe is just around the corner! We’ve had such an outpouring of love from friends and family. People excited about our trip, folks sharing their experiences, helping out with recommendations for food and fun. I just wanted to say thank you so much for reaching out! It is so appreciated. I can’t wait to share our trip with all of you… You know, after we get back. ūüėČ

Also, cats… amiright?

Happy Friday, friends!

All I have on my mind is adventure! Dan and I have been dreaming about traveling (our passports arrived for our Europe trip… And other travel eventually ;)), future plans, and goals. There are so many exciting adventures to be had, and I’m so glad to have such a sweet partner to share them with.

I am letting my imagination run wild. The sky is the limit. I am dreaming God-sized dreams. I am an adventurer.

How about you? What will your next adventure be?

Happy Friday! This week has been full of excitement and fun…

1. ¬†Dan and I LOVE¬†Jimmy Fallon. He is currently rocking it as the host of The Tonight Show, and we have watched pretty much every episode. (Okay, Dan has seen literally every episode.) ¬†We were thrilled when Jimmy took over as the host, but a little sad that he brought the show back to New York City. Well, he is bringing his fantastic show back to Los Angeles for one week next month. We had been waiting and watching for them to release tickets for those shows, and this week it finally happened. We sat in front of our computer for half and hour before the tickets dropped just refreshing the browser over and over. (It was just like registering for classes in college.) Then, our moment arrived. We were put through to select our date and reserve seats. A couple stressful minutes later we got our confirmation. We are going to The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon!!! I will unashamedly tell you that Dan and I screamed like small children, laughed maniacally, and fell all over ourselves with excitement. Jimmy, I think we are two of your biggest fans, and we can’t wait to see you!

2. ¬†More auditions this week! It’s been exciting and fun. I keep trying to approach each one without fear or doubt. I am just trying to show them me, and hope I am who they are looking for. I just feel like more adventures are coming our way this year. Stay tuned. #NoFear15

3. ¬†Speaking of exciting things, both Dan and I had really great experiences with Casting Directors this week. CDs are some of the hardest working people in this industry. It’s been a privilege to meet several who are doing all they can to help actors they believe in. Sometimes all we need is a leg up, a little push. Thank you for believing in us. You are appreciated!

4. ¬†Daniel Hackman gave in and got an Instagram this week. That’s right. The man who never takes pictures is finally… taking pictures. ANDposting them. I know. It was a shock for me too. If you want to follow that cute, crazy guy, you can find him under @DRHackman.

5.  More Disney time this week! We went with some of our Universal pals and it was such a great day in the parks. Not too crowded and the weather was delicious. One of my favorite parts of living in California will always be my annual pass to The Happiest Place on Earth.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Choose Your Own Adventure

21 Nov

I love adventure.  Being a part of new and exciting experiences. Challenging yourself and taking risks.  Truly and wonderfully living.

I am ridiculously infatuated with the idea of adventure.  I want to live my life adventurously, but sometimes the cautious, routine-loving woman who runs my brain makes me second guess myself.  It is up to my heart to kindly tell her to please keep her fears of failure and losing control to herself.  This is my life, and I am going to choose my own adventure!

I have recently been on multiple adventures with my new friend, Leah. ¬†We haven’t known each other very long, but I have already learned quite a bit from her. I admire the gutsy way she takes on life… she already wrote a brilliant blog post about what an adventure it was to become friends. (She’s a fantastic writer! Check it out here:¬†Friend Dating).

So, I am not going to get into that particular adventure, but I wanted to share some of the others we’ve had so far!

Trying to figure things out in a giant city can be pretty tricky (especially for the directionally challenged. Ahem…me). ¬†I get scared to go out and do new things because I don’t want to get lost, get in an accident, go to far, do it by myself… the excuses go on and on. ¬†The first thing Leah invited me to do with her was a fitness class. In a place I wasn’t familiar with. On trampolines. ¬†I thought it sounded amazing, but I was a little nervous about it. ¬†So many new things all at once… the uptight lady in my head was frowning in disapproval. ¬†But I had to do it! I wanted to do it! I went for it…And it really was awesome! ¬†New activity and new friend all in one night.

Since then we’ve been on a six-mile hike in Laurel Canyon, had a lunch date in a cute cafe, ¬†and made our way to Griffith Park on a photography expedition. ¬†Hanging out with Leah is always an adventure, and I am loving it. ¬†She’s inspired me to take some new risks and be open to new adventures. ¬†People, this is the kind of friend to have.

I cannot wait til our next adventure! ¬†Until then… “Adventure is out there!”

California Girl

24 Jun

From the time I was very little, I had an obsession with California. ¬†I was born into a family of Californians, but I had the “misfortune” to be born in Utah. ¬†It was unfair. ¬†The Golden State was home to beaches, Disneyland, Hollywood, ¬†and a large portion of my family. California was the dream, but I lived in Utah. ¬†So, I had to settle for family vacations to SoCal and listening to the Beach Boys on a regular basis.

This photo is of an eighth grade assignment

Many of my dreams changed, but some of them have stayed close to my heart.  California is one such dream, and two weeks ago it became a reality.  My husband and I just moved to Los Angeles, and I am FINALLY a California Girl.

The past couple weeks have been incredibly surreal and ridiculously exciting.  It was of utmost importance to do many touristy things as soon as possible.  Here is a look at our first California adventures:

We explored the Santa Monica Pier, shopped, and went to the beach.

Heather and Jo do Santa Monica

Daniel and I celebrated our second anniversary with season passes to Universal Studios!

Two Wonderful Years

We went to downtown Hollywood and explored the Walk of Fame.

Welcome to Hollywood!

The Disney Soda Fountain

A favorite star, Carol Burnett

Meryl Streep is one of my inspirations

Of course, The Beach Boys

Exploring California has been a wonderful adventure so far.  Every day I learn something new.  Every day I become a little more brave.  I am so thankful for the opportunity to begin living this dream.  I am ready to see what the world has in store for this California Girl.

Acting Up

23 Jun

Here it is.  My first blog.  My first post.

I’m Joanna. ¬†My whole life I have loved language and writing. ¬†I’ve been the keeper of many a diary, a scribbler of rants, the tears behind dramatic teenage poetry, a doodler of word art, the author of too many check lists, a scribe of prayers and wishes, and a woman who feels better when she can sit down and rationally write out the chaos in her brain.

It’s about time I started a blog.

So, why “The Art of Acting Up” you ask? (If you didn’t ask, just pretend. Okay?)

Part one: Well, I’m an actress and I… act.

Part two: Up.  The next level, a period of good fortune, doing something boldly, toward the sky or higher.  Sounds exciting, right?  At least, I think so.

Acting Up has come to mean three significant things to me, and that’s what this blog is all about.

  • Up for the Big Guy Upstairs. ¬†I want God to be glorified in all that I do. ¬†I am pursuing the passions He has given me. ¬† I want to show His love to all the people I can.¬†
  • I want to create significant and meaningful art. ¬†I want to tell stories that need to be heard. ¬†I want to take my abilities to the next level, and pursue an extraordinary career.
  • When something is “acting up” it can mean it is not normal, it is being active, it is being childish, it is being unruly. ¬†These are all things that can describe me at some time or another. ¬†I desire a life full of adventure and fun, and I am determined to have it.
So, there it is.  Acting Up.  There certainly is an art to it, and I am working on it every day.
Toward the sky or higher!
