Speaks To Me Sunday #80

9 Jul

Totally guilty of trying to solve my life. I constant find myself wanting to cross EVERYTHING off of my To-Do List in one day.

But if I cross it all off… what’s left to do? What life is there left to live? I don’t have to solve every problem and conquer every obstacle right this very minute. I don’t have to have everything planned out and perfectly pieced together.

What if I could stop looking at my life as something to solve and instead view it as a pile (an organized one 😉) of wonderful and good things. What if I cared for and nurtured those good things? What if my life grew into something beautiful?

I love a good To-Do list as much as the next Type-A girl. But even I have to admit that a Christmas-Morning-like pile of all the wonderful things in my life is so much more fulfilling than a crumpled up list of crossed off (or ya know… rewritten again and again) problems and worries.

So, one at a time. I want to build my pile of good things. Now I just have to decide what will I add to the pile first.

Merry Christmas to you!

This holiday season I feel like my favorite Christmas hymns have been impacting me in big ways. The lyrics I’ve known since I was a child are striking me like I’ve never heard them before. Maybe I just wasn’t listening. Well, I am now. And my heart is not only full, but open.

I have always loved “O Holy Night,” and it’s also my husband’s favorite. That one especially has stuck with me the last few weeks… God appeared on this earth in the form of Jesus, and we knew then how much we were loved. The Almighty God sent His only Son just so he could be with us. “And the soul felt it’s worth.” My worth is not determined by what I do, but the truth that I am a beloved daughter of the King. That is certainly something to be celebrated!

Remember that you have worth. You are so loved. That is the reason for this season – Love is here.

Merry Christmas!

I don’t even know what to say.

I am so thankful for the love of my mom and dad. I am so grateful God gave me two amazing humans who have dedicated so much of their lives to my wellbeing and happiness. Even now when I’m so many miles away – they are still ere for me. When I really stop and think of it, I am overwhelmed. And completely humbled. I am so loved.

Hey Mom and Dad, thank you. From the bottom of my heart,  I love you too!

(Also, aren’t handwritten cards the best?)

Favorite Five Friday (148th Edition)

17 Jun

Friday is has arrived. How was your week? You doing okay? I hope so! There’s been some wonderful things happening as well as some truly awful things. Regardless, I am always trying to find the good…

1. When you’re celebrating, you go to Disneyland! Where else?! 😉 We were able to take a mini Staycation in Anaheim to celebrate our anniversary. The evening we arrived, we hit Downtown Disney for dinner. We had never tried the full Jazz Kitchen restaurant, so we decided to treat ourselves. The service was great (I love places that bring you champagne when you’re celebrating) and the food was delicious. We had such a wonderful time. We followed that up with a few rides before heading back to our AirBnB. The next morning we got to Disneyland fairly early, and we really hit all the rides we wanted just after noon. A great part of being an annual passholder is the ability to call it a day and head home to relax. Which ended up being good since it turned out that I was very sunburned. Whoops! We had a really wonderful time. You can’t go wrong with Disney!

2. We celebrated our SIXTH anniversary this week! Six years of adventures with my favorite human. 5 apartments, dozens of jobs, a move across the country, 2 kitties, and countless memories. My husband is always the one I want to snuggle with for an evening in, cry with when things are hard, laugh with…uncontrollably, and experience all life has to offer. We’ve been through so much. Together. Always together. I can’t wait to see what year seven holds.

3. I’m fairly certain that Dan gave me the best anniversary gift ever. Season tickets to the Pantages!! Which also means we’ll be seeing Hamilton! Not until August of 2017, but we are going! So excited. And just as excited about the rest of the season lineup. It’s going to be a blast. Well played, Hackman.

4. This week we started a food experiment called the Whole30. For 30 days we eat nothing but whole foods. No additives, no preservatives. Just whole, delicious food. It’s a lot of prepping and planning, but we are doing it! At the end of the 30 days, we will slowly introduce off plan foods to see how they affect us. I get chronic headaches and my allergies are always bad… If I can prevent these things by controlling the food I eat, I will. I’m interested to learn more about the food we consume and how it makes us feel. Of course, an added bonus would be losing a little weight. But the main goal is just to be healthy.  I’ll keep you updated on how we are doing!

5. The tough stuff. My heart has been so heavy these last few weeks… The media has been flooded with stories about a rapist getting off with a punishment far too lenient for his crime, a toddler lost to his family after an alligator attack, and a senseless shooting in Orlando where people lost their lives for being who they are. I want to weep. I can’t even begin to share how I feel. So many others have done it so eloquently already, but I can’t say nothing. I can’t allow silence to be mistaken for a lack of feeling. To those directly affected, I may not fully understand what you are going through, but I cry with you. I stand with you. I love you. And I will continue to look for the good, the heroes, the helpers in these dark situations… The bicyclists who stopped Brock Allen Turner from continuing to harm his victim, this victimThis woman who showed tremendous courage by sharing her story and standing up for herself (and women everywhere), watching as my theme park family has come together to honor the 49 lives lost in Orlando – the 6 who were our own in particular. I’m so glad to have been able to stand with more than 1,000 of Universal Studios Hollywood team members last night as we connected with our team members from Beijing, Singapore, Osaka, and Orlando to celebrate the lives we lost. Every shared story, every post, every shout into the darkness… They are seen, they are heard. Keep speaking your truth, keep spreading love. Oh, how we need it.

Hug your loved ones a little tighter.

Happy Friday, friends.

Every minute of it.

I am working on living in the moment and loving every minute.

Lately I have been a few steps ahead… Thinking and dreaming about what is next. Where do I go from here?

While I certainly believe in goal setting and planning… There is an unhealthy point where you forget to be present. There are so many wonderful things happening right now. I don’t want to miss them by focusing all my attention on what’s to come.

My goal for this next week is to love my life, love the present moment. Life is happening now.

Do you spend too much time focusing on the future? How do you bring yourself back to the moment you’re in?

I wanna hear your thoughts! Comment below or find me on Instagram and Twitter: @JoannaHackman

Hey! It’s that time again…

1.  My awesome parents are celebrating their 31st Anniversary this month! They took a road trip to Cali with a couple of friends to mark the occasion. It was fun having them on our turf for the weekend. They came to Universal to hang out, take my tour, take Dan’s tour, and generally have a good time. We got to eat lots of yummy food, laugh at silly moments, and make some memories. Love my family.

2.  I have the sweetest niece in all the land. She is smart, sassy, funny, artistic, and poetic. I love the latest drawing for my fridge (her favorite song is “Firework”):

3.  Universal Studios Hollywood is gearing up for a busy summer! We just held auditions to add some awesome new guides to our roster. Being a part of the audition process is one of my favorite things. See you on the Trams, trainees!

4.  We’ve been waiting for what seems like forever for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Mom had the brilliant idea to go see it at the historic El Capitan Theatre! So, we did – VIP style. We got free drinks, popcorn, and great seats. The movie was spectacular on the big screen, and we got to see some of Stan Lee’s private collection of Marvel memorabilia. Such a cool night! Thanks Mom and Dad. 🙂

5.  I’m pretty sure I have the best husband ever. I’ve been sickly this week and really struggling to function. He jumped to the rescue to take care of me and all of the daily details. He knocked out my car registration, plans for our move, started packing, made sure I had food I could eat, and snuggled me on the couch while we watched whatever I wanted. He’s the man. I can never say enough that I am thankful to have him as my partner. So, I just needed to share that here. I am a  ridiculously lucky girl. This photo might have been taken when we were engaged, but it’s still true. Babe…

Happy Friday, friends! Have the loveliest weekend!

Speaks To Me Sunday #4

5 Apr

This is a very special Speaks To Me Sunday as it is Easter Sunday! He is Risen! Nothing could possibly speak to me more than that. This quote is lyrics from one of my favorite hymns.

Thank you, God, for giving your son that I might live. Your love for us is unimaginable. Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice. You are victorious.

There is so much to celebrate.

Happy Easter!
